What We Did

Madrid

Wednesday, September 8, 2004

We took a 10 am Iberia flight from Palma to Madrid. After arriving in Madrid we took the Metro to our hotel. We stayed at the Wellington Hotel in the fashionable Serrano area of Madrid. This is a four star hotel with exceptional accommodations and service. After checking into the hotel, took stroll out into the streets of Madrid.
Madrid is like any other big city in Europe - majestic building centuries old, broad boulevards stretching for miles, and museums and historical sites on almost every corner.

After walking around for a while we wanted to have some lunch By now Maya fell asleep in the stroller. We decided to have lunch at Teatriz. This is a trendy restaurant that shows off its decor designed by world-class decorator Philippe Starck. The atmosphere as well as the tapas is awesome, so is the wine collection.

We then headed back to the hotel and took a well-deserved nap. That night we explored other areas around Madrid and had dinner at an Italian restaurant.

Thursday, September 9, 2004

Thursday moring we walked a couple of blocks to have breakfast at Mallorca - a specialty food store and bakery. This is Madrid's best gourmet pastry shop. They offer an array of cheeses, canapés, roasted and marinated meats, sausages, and about a dozen kinds of paté accompany a spread of tiny pastries, tarts, and chocolates. They also have an impressive collection of Spanish wines and brandies and an assortment of tapas.

I really wanted to go to the Prado museum. However, since we didn’t think Maya would endure a trip through a museum we decided that Michele would take Maya to Parque del Retiro, a park located about a block away from our hotel practically in the center of Madrid, while I went to the Prado.

Maya and mommy had loads of fun at the park. They then went back to the hotel for a swim. I meanwhile went to visit the Prado Museum.
Although the museum contains German, Italian and French paintings, there is no better place to see all the magnificent works of Spanish painters between 1100 and 1850 than right here. The museum boasts of paintings by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Ribera and Murillo. If you are an art lover or otherwise this is a must see attraction in Madrid.

We relaxed the rest of the evening, got some dinner and went to bed.

Friday, September 10, 2004

We woke up early this morning, got some breakfast at Mallorca again and headed to Parque del Retiro. This is huge park in the center of Madrid filled with fountains and statues at every corner.
In the middle of this park is a lake called the Estanque. At one end of the lake is the Monumento a Alfonso XII. In the middle centuries fake naval battles were staged here as practice for the Spanish navies.

We rented a rowboat and rowed across the lake. This was fun. We then went walked over to the Monumento a Alfonso XII. After enjoying the lake from this vantage point, we walked through the park to the Palacio de Cristal the Crystal Palace. This is a beautiful all glass building surrounded by a flower gardens and ponds filled with ducks and swans. We then walked over to the La Rosalida, a Rose Garden filled with numerous varieties of roses.

We then headed to Palacio Real, the Royal Palace of Madrid. This palace with 250 years of history is considered the best in Europe. It has 870 windows, 240 balconies, 44 sets of stairs and 110 doors. The Spanish Royal family does not reside there anymore, but it is still used for official acts of state as well as special ceremonies.
The rooms contain extraordinary tapestries and frescoes done by master artists. Some walls are covered with red velvet lined with silver. The tapestries come from the Royal Factory of Tapestries.

After visiting the Palace, we had lunch at an outdoor restaurant Cafe de Oriente which is located right across from the Royal Palace.

We then walked to Plaza Mayor, which was built in 1617. In the center of the square is an equestrian statue of Felipe III who ordered the building of the square. At one time, bullfights, pageants and even public executions were held here.
Now it contains shops, restaurants and cafes. In the center set of buildings is a façade decorated with allegorical paintings called Casa de la Panaderia. While we were there we witnessed a beautiful wedding ceremony. After doing some shopping (mainly for souvenirs) we headed back to the hotel.

Saturday, September 11, 2004

We woke up early Saturday morning and took a cab to the airport. Being the 3rd anniversary of the 9-11 atrocities, airport security was tight. After several screenings and security checks we finally boarded the aircraft and headed home to the good old USA.

We enjoyed Spain tremendously and hope to visit again sometime in the future, perhaps the southern and western regions.
